Why "Dino Ciani"

The "Dino Ciani" Association derives its name and its animating spirit from a great young pianist, a remarkable personality of the Italian and International music world.
Dino Ciani has been a distinguished artist for his intensely meaningful performances, for the enthusiasm he communicated, for the deep impression left on everyone who was lucky enough to attend his concerts.
His art, although fulfilled and mature, has been young only: his wonderful energy was interrup-ted in 1974, by a car accident. He was only 33.
Thus it is not by chance that he has been chosen as the symbol of the ™Dino Ciani¨ Association, founded to promote musical culture, especially through the education and specialization of young musicians in order to introduce them to the possibility of a profession in that field and improve every opportunity of experience and comparison.
Dino Ciani can be remembered through these young talented artists whom the Association operates to promote by organizing concerts (up to 600 every year), festivals, courses and competitions. The most prestigious competition dedica-ted to Dino Ciani is held in Verbania - Stresa and is closely connected to the homonymous three-year old International Competition of the Scala Theatre in Milan. We have been honoured by eminent personalities from the Italian music world joining the Guest Committee together with Artistic Directors anc Supervisors of the most important Italian Theatres, evidence of the importance of our music competition.
For the last four years, the competitions entrance-fees have been entirely given to the charities "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza" San Giovanni Rotondo - Foggia and the Association for the people struck by Alzheimers disease led by Charitas of Verbano.

The Association ™Dino Ciani¨ aims to help charitable activities and attempts to support many significant cultural projects.

COURSES: international music courses.
ORCHESTRA: the musical courses Orchestra Ciani.

ORCHESTRAS COMPETITION: Teatro "La Fabbrica" in Villadossola (VB) - May 1999.
The courses are reserved for students and graduates of the Conservatoire and include a comprehensive group of musical disciplines: pianoforte, harp guitar, chamber music, quartet, pianoforte with four hands; string instruments: violin, viola, violoncello and contrabass; wind instruments:clarinet, flute, oboe, bag pipe, trum-pet, trombone, cornet. The courses also include the Orchestras conduction, bringing this way the whole to a unity: the students of this course will lead an orchestra formed by other students attending single-instrument courses, the result being a different orchestra each time but always called "Orchestra Ciani dei Corsi Musicali".
In relation to this, the Paul Harris Competition (Soloists con Orchestra) must be remarked: it took place in Villadossola on May 1999 and the orchestras conductor came right from the "Dino Ciani" specialized courses.
The courses give the young musicians many opportunities to meet each other and to work together, as they are engaged not only as soloists, but also in chamber groups or in the orchestra hard work. The courses represent an important emotional exchange and also a moment for friendship an creative fun.

Music for life

The ™Dino Ciani¨ Association conveys another important message whose meaningful title is "Music for Life" .
Considering thus the cultural and spiritual affinities between scientific and musical research, the association is engaged with activites where music is employed to help diseased people and medicine in general. This is obtained by using music both as a relief and asa vehicle meant to spread information about the work of many humanitarian organizations. Therefore the "Dino Ciani" Association has been cooperating with groups of doctors belonging to several hospitals for many years, generally with musictherapy sessions or simply with concerts performed by young artists already awarded in "Dino Ciani" competitions.
One of the first hospitals that joined this project was the University Scientific Institute S. Raffaele in Milan. This cooperation led to a round table entitled ™Music beyond the show¨ which was held in Verbania in 1995 and which was meant to analyse and discuss the sessions realized with the S. Raffaele Hospital of Milan. Lectures were given by experts of the field such as the psychologist Dr. Italo Pistoia, the psychologist Dr. Nullina Nizzola, the sociologist Dr. Vittoria Gnocato, the music therapist Dr. Ombretta Franco, the musical critic Dr. Andrea Bambace.
The orchestra of the "Dino Ciani" specializing course, then as in other occasions before, performed with a remarkable concert at the beginning and at the end of the meeting.
The number of concerts connected with Music for Life has been increasing in the last years, involving the S. Biagio Hospital in Domodossola and the Pio Albergo Trivulzio of Milan. There the Monday Concert has already become an appreciated appointment. Milans newspapers inform about the concerts programmes and allow all the fans and the guests relatives to join the initiative.

To L.I.T.A goes the merit of having started. L.I.T.A. is an association created to take care of the problems connected with old age and it includes also doctors and social assistents. The Monday concerts represent a social occasion, especially for the old people living in the Pio Albergo Trivulzio, and a chance to experience that special kind of emotion that only art can give.
The enthusiastic audience is the best rewarding for these young artists who create a mutual understanding with their listeners ready to reply with signs of praise.

The concerts

It is difficult to imagine how many young artists, graduated in our Conservatoire, are able to perform, even for a demanding audience, a wide repertory of classical pieces with cultural maturity and interpreting skills. Many of them hardly find a large audience. In fact the classical music appreciators are not such a wide audience, and in addition a part of them is used to enjoying their favourtite music at home, with records, feeling the harmony of the notes, alone with their own thoughts.
This is why on one hand the listeners often miss the typical emotion given by a concert where a creative relationship is estabilished between the performer and the audience and on the other hand the artist cannot enjoy the chance to express and to perceive the impact of his art while performing and to receive the applause which is certainly the most appreciated reward for the performers passion and effort. The "Dino Ciani" Association, by organizing concerts in many cities, in Italy and abroad, gives its contribution to the increasing of opportunities to meet given to artists and audience, an audience that is gradually growing. These young artists have successfully performed in culturally remarkable places such as Palazzo Albrizzi in Venezia, Circolo Ufficiali in Trieste, Sala delle Camelie and Salone delle Feste of the Grand Hotel des Iles Borromées, Villa Francesca, Sala dei Rododendri of the Hotel Regina and Palazzo dei Congressi in Stresa.

Memories' album

But in the "Dino Ciani" memories album there are also performances held in Duino, Mestre, Roma, Domodossola, Verbania, Baveno, Macugnaga, Verona, Arizzano, Assago, Bad Ragaz, Bannio Anzino, Bee, Briga, Calasca Castiglione, Catanzaro, Cinisello Balsamo, Cortina dAmpezzo, Dissimo, Druogno, Ginevra, Isola Bella, Isola Pescatori, Malesco, Martigny, Masera, Montana, Ornavasso, (etc.)... and even at the Gianadda Institution of Martigny, always engaged in cultural and artistic activities.
It is really touching to go back to those events and read those evocative titles: "Ecoffres d'Art - Arts caskets" (harmonic mixture of music and painting) "Notes on the Lagoon" and "Beyond Stars" and "Arabesques in the Lagoon¨"- "Sea Harmonies" -"Listen Together" - "Once Upon a Time: Stars are Listening" - "Never-ending Song" - "Song for You" - "Doges Concerts" - "Spring Concerts" - "Serenissimas Concerts" - "Elegies in Duino" - "Eternal harmonies" - "Arts Concerts" - "Art Spell" - "Libe a Tale for the Soul" - "Golden Notes" - "Francesco Forgione" - "Homage to Padre Pio" - "Homage to the Guest" - "To Give a Dream" - "Stresa and the Borromei family" - "I will play for You" - "A Light for the Churches".
And more concerts in Milan: at the Hilton Hotel, Hilton Hotel Baglioni and Forte Crest Hotel and also at the Forte Holtel Agip in Venice, Duino, Trieste, Assago, Rome.

Compact Disc

A beautiful and moving memory is associated with the production of a CD with pieces of music by F. Liszt realized in a little church turned into a recording room: hectic days of hard work and passionate rush, where the sounds reached a supernatural force. With very few remakings, the CD was produced at a constant and tireless pace that immediately attained a formal perfection.
The result consists in 6.000 CDs printed with the name of the performer, Simone Gragnani, on the colour picture of the church of Montebuglio, slanting and oblique, as in a dream, taken from the swollen mirror of a car. Even this work is gat to the musical art, in the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the Rotary Club Pallanza Stresa in 1999.

Competitions

The 2000 competition-season closing balance has been brilliant: the first edition of the International Music Competition "Francesco Forgione" with the support of the General Consulate of the German Federal Republic and the Provincia di Milano, and the second edition of the International Music Competition "Isole Borromee" both supported by the Comunit Montana Valle Ossola. Both held in Verbania Intra by the Auditorium of the Famiglia Studenti "Il Chiostro" on May 5 - 13, 2000
In fact the two International Music Competitions held last year (2000) have been attended by more than 160 competitors. The entry fees of the partici-pants have reached the amount of 12 million lira and have been entirely given to the Charities "Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza" San Giovanni Rotondo - Foggia and the association for the people struck by alzheimers disease led by Charitas of Verbano.

The "Thank You" notebook

DIANA DE SILVA - Farmaceutica Bracco and Dr. AMALIA MANTICA ARRIGOTTI.

Luckily the "Dino Ciani" Association has many friends who love music and care about the future of young musicians encouraging them with prizes and awards. Among these friends it is necessary to remember Dr. Diana De Silva - Casa Farmaceutica BRACCO who, in the first Edition of the International Music Competition "Francesco Forgione" and in the contemporary second Edition of the International Music Competition "Isole Borromee" (Verbania May 5 -13, 2000) has provided prizes for the participants, with 150 wonderful Byblos packets for the girls and Ferr ones for the boys.
It has been a great event, for everybody, welcomed with joy by the competitors, the parents and the audience.
Every participant has received the Bracco prize as a reward for their effort and skills, even not considering their single performance worth. As a souvenir we keep a journal of the competition with the names and addresses of the artists who have writ-ten their "thank you". We call it the "thank you" notebook.
We are especially grateful to Dr. Amalia Mantica Arrigotti who has offered with generosity all the money prizes at the first International Music Competition "Francesco Forgione" Verbania 2000.

BANCA POPOLARE DI INTRA:
a train of gifts
BP Is contributions to culture are rich and timely. The Banks own vocation is to produce and to increase wealth; the discernment of its managers allows it to extend that talent to the social and cultural field by financing projects that start and grow and will give rise to many more.
That is how BPI is often beside us and its logo follows our success. Its presence is always visible even in the concert halls and the competitions theatres where the audience applause is also meant for whom, behind the scenes, helps making dreams come true.

The future concerts

Other pictures to remember and celebrate the ten year of the ™Dino Ciani¨ Association
And if our present time is full of appointments such as the concerts at the Pio Albergo Trivulzio in Milan on Mondays, the recitals at Palazzo Albrizzi in Venice on Saturdays and those at the Circolo Ufficiali in Trieste, our plans for the future are even more promising. Ready to start are the "Concerti del Decennale" to be held in Stresa: "Concerti di Primavera" from April 27 to June, "Concerti d'estate" from 29 August 27, 2001, and "Concerti d'Autunno" from August 29 to October 8, 2001.

Competitions in 2001

We are trying to make them more and more interesting...
Every competition will be followed by another edition: the International Music Competition "Francesco Forgione" Verbania is at its II Edition; the International Music Competition "Isole Borromee" Verbania is at its III Edition.
Verbania will also host the final selection and prize-giving of the II National Competition "Progetto Musica" of the Soroptimist International of Italy in September 2001.

Where is the ™Dino Ciani¨ Association?

... Even the empty concert hall, when you can still hear the music and the applause of the evening, when the flower vases are picked up and the sponsor banner are taken away when the sings of the concert slowly disappear and everything seems over, the "Dino Ciani" Association is still there, ready to start again.
The engagement we have taken on to help young artists with talent never stops for breaks. Many of them perform in "Dino Ciani" concerts to "try" a new programme before an important competition, or an exa-mination, or the recording of a new CD.
The "Dino Ciani" Association welcomes them with love and trust in their hopes.
Sometimes these reasons hide the simple need to gather together. These are often occasions of joy. These musicians meet old friends after having studied for long periods and share their own progresses with them. It is a way of comparing different works and encouraging each other. It often happens that some of them become very important professional artists, busy with their success. Even though this will make it difficult for them to attend our meetings we are not sad.
This is exactly what we expect from them. We are very proud and, sharing their happiness, we follow them in the most prestigious concert halls, with the only wish that their talent will be recognized and will bring them to the stars...

... e lievi le stelle percorrono il cielo (Giovanni Pascoli)

Competition Programme and Golden album

The competitions have followed two different aims.

The piano competitions were meant for a very limited number of young artists with great talent in order to allow them to accept the challenge of selective and engaging competitions, with particularly difficult pieces of music. The winners are now promises of the Italian piano world.
Other competitions have been conceived and realized as music parties: open to younger artists, for every kind of instrument, even though they have prizes according to skills, they are basically meant as a tribute to passion, work, will.
Music might not become a profession for these young partecipants who will maintain nevertheless a cultural interest and continue appreciating the joy and the emotional tension of music. Hundreds of happy faces, proud parents - and for the best ones the satisfaction of a public exibition - are the nice memories of the Association as much as they are for who has lived them as a participant.

Our music lives within the passion and the talent of young artists and the affection of all the people who have been following and supporting us for years.
